What is a tincture, and how should I take it?
A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract of an herb, made by soaking plant material in alcohol to draw out its active constituents. For Milk Moon's tinctures, fresh plants are infused in organic high-proof alcohol for one full moon cycle. Tinctures are typically taken by the dropper full, diluted in a bit of water.
How do I use the Fertility and Postpartum Tonics?
These tonics can be taken directly by the spoonful or mixed into sparkling water, hot water (to make a tea), yogurt, oatmeal, or smoothies. Feel free to experiment to find your preferred method.
Why is brandy included in the Postpartum and Fertility Tonics?
The brandy serves two purposes. First it acts as a natural preservative, along with the honey. Honey alone has preservative qualities, but adding a bit of low-proof alcohol adds extra assurance that the Tonic will be shelf stable for a quite a while.
Secondly, we infuse the brandy with herbs, essentially making it a tincture. The method we use of combing a water based preparation with an alcohol based tincture makes it a stronger, more effective medicine.
To put the alcohol content in perspective, there is approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of a teaspoon of brandy per serving, and of that only 40% is alcohol ( brandy is 40 alcohol by volume). The alcohol consumed with each tablespoon serving is negligible.
There is a long tradition of preserving herbal syrups in this way, and we honor tradition over modern chemical preservatives.
Safety & Usage
Is it safe to use alcohol-based tinctures while breastfeeding?
Yes, the amount of alcohol in the finished products is minimal and considered safe during breastfeeding.
Can I use these products during pregnancy?
It's recommended to consult with your midwife, doctor, or a local herbalist to determine if herbal products are appropriate for you during pregnancy.
I'm past the early postpartum stage; is it too late to use the postpartum products?
Not at all. Postpartum extends well beyond the first month. Many customers use these products well into the first year after having a baby.
Storage & Shelf Life
What is the shelf life of the products, and do they need to be refrigerated?
Tinctures are shelf-stable and do not need refrigeration, though they may lose potency over time; it's recommended to use them within a year. The Postpartum and Fertility Tonics should be refrigerated after opening to maintain freshness.
Orders & Shipping
How quickly will my order ship?
Orders generally ship quickly, however we ask that customers expect a 2-3 day processing period, as our team is small and during times of sales or increased traffic, it is not always possible to process orders as quickly as we'd like.
Where is my package?
Should you have any issue with your delivery such as a late package or a package that you cannot locate when the tracking shows as delivered, please first contact the carrier and provide them with your tracking number for help. We are unable to locate packages for you after they have left our warehouse. Only the carrier has this ability.If the carrier determines the package is lost, please contact us for further assistance.
What if my tracking hasn't updated?
Tracking is sent as soon as your order has been processed for shipment. Please allow 24 hours for it to update. Occasionally carriers have electronic glitches or slower processing times and it can take up to 48 hours to update.
Do you accept returns/exchanges?
Due to the nature of our products, we can only accept returns or exchanges on products that are unopened and sealed. Return request must be made within 14 days. Buyer is responsible for return shipping cost.If an item breaks in transit, please email us right away and we’re happy to send a replacement. Please include a photo of the damaged item if possible.
